Warm Weather Is Here And So Is Your Need For Hydration!

You’ve probably heard that you need to drink eight 8-ounce cups of water each day, but did you know that number is merely for children? If you are larger than a child, you should be consuming more. A good rule of thumb is a quart for every 50 pounds of body weight. That means if you weigh 200 pounds, you should be drinking a full gallon! Athletes should drink even more.

Our bodies are made up of approximately 70% water. It flushes things through, transports important ions and hormones and allows our cells to function properly. Without adequate amounts, symptoms such as dry skin, headaches and constipation will occur. Long term side effects can cause organs to slowly stop functioning.

Here are some helpful hints for your summertime thirst-quencher:
-Your source of water is important. Spring water is best due to the fact that it contains valuable minerals.
-Another good option is filtered water. Filtered water can be obtained through low-cost filters, such as those provided by Brita or PUR brands. Another recommendation of mine is the GE SmartWater brand.
-Avoid distilled water due to the fact that it has no mineral content in it and can drain your body of minerals. Certain mineral deficiencies have been tied to hair loss and decreased immune function.
-Avoid tap water due to the added chlorine and fluoride which can cause bone loss and lead to osteoporosis.
-Glass or clear polyethylene containers are best.
-Another option are the BPA (Bisphenol-A) free containers. BPA is found in plastics and exhibits hormone-like properties and imitates the effects of naturally occurring estrogens. This can cause a hormone imbalance and lead to a multitude of symptoms.
-Don’t drink ice-cold water. It can harm the sensitive lining to your stomach. Room temperature beverages have been shown to boost metabolism.

Enjoy your summer by drinking plenty of water! Your body will thank you.
